The Perkins Pirates will face off against the Lexington Minutemen at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Perkins has given up an average of 10.4 runs per game this season, but Saturday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Wednesday just wasn't the day for Perkins' offense. They came up short against Clyde on Wednesday, falling 18-0. Having soared to a lofty 19 runs in the game before, the Pirates' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.
Meanwhile, Lexington entered their tilt with Wooster on Wednesday with three consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with four. They didn't even let the Generals on the board, marking their second-straight 10-0 shutout. Considering the Minutemen have won ten contests by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Makaree Chapman made a big impact no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 12 over six innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than one walk in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Alexis Cantrell, who went 1-for-3 with three runs and one RBI. Quinn Patrick was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Lexington hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least five batters in six consecutive matches.
Lexington's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-2. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.2 runs over those games. As for Perkins, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-8.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Perkins has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Lexington struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
