Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
David Cassetti Jr. of
Ansonia is the 2022 MaxPreps Connecticut High School Football Player of the Year. The 5-foot-10, 205-pound senior running back led the Chargers to a 13-0 record and the Class S state championship.
For the year, Cassetti ran for nearly 2,000 yards and 33 touchdowns. In the state championship game, he ran 34 times for 171 yards while throwing a touchdown pass and converting a two-point conversion to help the Chargers knock off Bloomfield 28-21.
The victory brought Ansonia its 21st state title but first since 2016.
"It’s the best feeling in the world to bring the title back to Ansonia where it belongs," Cassetti told Jean Falbo-Sosnovich of the Valley Independent Sentinel. "This town isn’t called a ?‘title town’ for no reason."
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released January 10.
