The Onteora Eagles will venture away from home to face off against the Eldred Yellowjackets at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Eldred will take on a team with plenty of momentum: Onteora extended their winning streak to five on Saturday. The Eagles narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Taconic Hills 32-30. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' New York football rankings (they are ranked eighth, while the Titans are ranked 196th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Onteora can attribute much of their success to Jameer Maize, who gained 185 total yards and a touchdown, and Chase Matteson, who rushed for 53 yards and one score. An impressive showing, but Matteson really ramped things up playing D: he picked up two sacks, made 13 total tackles, and defended one pass. Kyle Berryann also helped with three TDs in total.

Onteora's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB four times. The heavy lifting was done by Martin Berhman and Matteson, who racked up all four sacks between them. Berhman also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with seven. Berryann got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Eldred scored the most points they've had this season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They took a 52-48 hit to the loss column at the hands of Sullivan West. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Friday (46), the Yellowjackets still had to take the loss.
Onteora will have to contain Koen McGill as he made an impact in Eldred's last game. He rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns on only 15 carries, and also threw for 260 yards and three TDs. McGill really tore up the turf during one magnificent 78-yard run. Another player making a difference was James Deyermond, who picked up 123 receiving yards and three scores.
Eldred didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Nathan Kinne and McGill. McGill has been hot recently, having also posted three or more passing touchdowns the last three times he's played.
Onteora's victory bumped their record up to 5-0. As for Eldred, their defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 4-2.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Onteora has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 229.2 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Eldred struggles in that department as they've been averaging 181.2 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Onteora came up short against Eldred in their previous meeting back in October of 2024, falling 40-30. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
