Defending high school basketball national champ Chino Hills wins 50th consecutive game

Chino Hills continues to make magic happen on the court.

High school basketball has seen longer winning streaks, but it's unlikely there has been a more celebrated run of success from a national perspective.

Defending national champion Chino Hills (Calif.) won its 50th consecutive game Thursday night, topping previously-unbeaten Pleasant Grove (Utah) 106-93 in the semifinals of the Rancho Mirage Holiday Invitational.

The Huskies – now 15-0 on the season and ranked No. 2 in MaxPreps.com's High School Top 25 – haven't lost since March 27, 2015, a 79-71 setback to San Ramon Valley (Danville) in the California Division I state championship game.

Even without current UCLA fab freshman Lonzo Ball, Chino Hills continues to look like one of the best teams in the country behind younger brothers LiAngelo and LaMelo Ball and star role players Elizjah Scott and Onyeka Okongwu. LiAngelo, a 6-foot-5 senior also headed to UCLA, has scoring performances of 72 and 65 points this season for the defending section, state and national champions.

Chino Hills has beaten teams from 10 different states outside of California during the streak, going 14-0 against out-of-state opponents overall.

The Huskies have scored 100 points or more in 25 of the 50 wins, averaging 98.4 points per game over the entirety of the streak – including staggering totals of 131 (twice), 128, 125 and 124.

Incredibly, the Inland Empire powerhouse may not even be the favorite to win the Open Division title in California this season. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) is ranked No. 1 in the High School Top 25 and there is plenty of buzz already about a meeting between those schools in the postseason. Passaic (N.J.) (N.J.) won 159 consecutive games from 1919-25, the longest streak in high school basketball history according to the NFHS record book.

St. Anthony (Jersey City, N.J.) has the most notable recent streak at 83 between 2010-13. The Friars were named national champs by MaxPreps twice during that span.

Chino Hills will look to extend its win streak Friday night against Sheldon (Sacramento) or Crossroads (Santa Monica) in the Rancho Mirage Holiday Invitational championship game.
