La Junta has gone 7-1 against Salida recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Tigers are taking a road trip to square off against the Spartans at 10:00 a.m. La Junta is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
On Tuesday, La Junta came up short against Buena Vista and fell 6-2.
La Junta got a good showing from Treyce Lovato, who pitched 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those zero earned runs gave Lovato a new career-low.
On the hitting side, La Junta saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Eli Stokes, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last contest, Salida made sure to put some runs up on the board against Platte Canyon on Wednesday. The Spartans' pitcher stepped up to hand the Huskies a 16-0 shutout. The Spartans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by eight runs or more this season.
Matthew Edgington made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over four innings pitched. Edgington was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Salida got a massive performance out of Orion Post, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Those three runs gave Post a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Anthony Taverna, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Salida was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .524. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Salida is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-7 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for La Junta, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost eight of their last nine contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-14 record this season.
Friday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. La Junta has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .431. However, it's not like Salida struggles in that department as they've averaged .471. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went La Junta's way against Salida in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as La Junta made off with a 9-3 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Tigers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
