Softball Recap: Southampton Comes Up Short

Southampton managed to slip by Smithfield the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Indians came up short against the Packers on Wednesday, falling 9-3. The Indians' defeat signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Zoe Banks was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and six unearned) runs off nine hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season.

At the plate, Southampton saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Anne Jackson Pope, who went 3-for-4 with one home run and three RBI.

Southampton's loss dropped their record down to 3-2. As for Smithfield, they now have a winning record of 4-3.

Coming up, Southampton will be playing at home against Arcadia at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Indians are facing the Firebirds at the right time seeing as the Firebirds are stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Smithfield, they didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 10-0 defeat against New Kent on the 10th.
