Winning is just a little bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 16 to 5 on the offensive boards, a fact the Bishop Verot Vikings proved on Wednesday. They took their contest at home with ease, bagging a 73-39 win over Lemon Bay. Given Bishop Verot's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 212th, while Lemon Bay is ranked 542nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Bishop Verot was led to victory by Gavin Williams and Leroy Roker. Williams scored 26 points along with 3 steals, while Roker scored 20 points along with 7 rebounds and 7 steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Williams has scored at least 25% of Bishop Verot's points. Another player making a difference was Tyler Reeder, who scored 8 points along with 11 rebounds and 3 steals.
Defeat or not, Lemon Bay got some senior leadership from Lucas Newcomb who scored 12 points and Cooper Benedict who scored 8 points along with 6 rebounds. Newcomb scored a full 30.8% of Lemon Bay's points, the second time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Conner Towne, who scored 6 points.
Bishop Verot now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Lemon Bay, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-4.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Bishop Verot's homestand continues as they prepare to take on Out-of-Door Academy at 7:00 p.m. on December 11th. Lemon Bay will take on Hardee at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
