The Calvert Senecas will venture away from home to challenge the New Riegel Blue Jackets at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. One thing working in Calvert's favor is that they have posted at least ten runs in their last five matchups.
While Calvert didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-18), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. Their pitcher stepped up to hand South Central an 18-0 shutout on Saturday. The victory continues a trend for the Senecas in their matchups with the Trojans: they've now won five in a row.
Ava Eilrich made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over 4.2 innings pitched. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing three bases while going 1-for-3. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 1.1 stolen bases per game.
In other batting news, Gracie Miller was a standout: she went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three stolen bases, and six RBI. Another player making a difference was Addison King, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs.
Calvert was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .542. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, New Riegel came tearing into Wednesday's contest with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against the Chieftains by a score of 5-2. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Calvert pushed their record up to 9-1 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.2 runs on average over those games. As for New Riegel, their record now sits at 5-1.
Calvert might still be hurting after the 10-0 loss they got from New Riegel in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Senecas avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
