Basketball Recap: Riverside Sets Scoring Season-High Against Clint

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Riverside). They simply couldn't be stopped on Friday as they easily beat the Clint Lions 85-31. Given the Rangers' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 273rd, while the Lions are ranked 650th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Riverside's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Aj Alvarado, who went 12 for 14 on her way to 29 points in addition to eight rebounds and five steals. That's the most boards Alvarado has posted since back in November of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Jocelyn Castro, who went 11 of 18 on her way to 24 points along with six rebounds and four steals.

Riverside was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Clint only racked up five assists.

Despite the loss, Clint still got an impressive performance from Anabella Portillo, who went 5 of 12 en route to 17 points along with five boards and four steals. Portillo has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 12 times she's played.

Riverside's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-8. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 70.3 points per game. As for Clint, their loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 17-6.

Riverside and Clint's offenses will be put to the test in their next games. Riverside and Fabens (who has only given up 26.38 points per game) will meet at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Riverside is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 50.4 points per game this season. Meanwhile, Clint and Mountain View (who has only given up 27.73 points per game) will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
