The St. Ignatius Wildcats came tearing into Friday's match with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12 points) and they left with even more momentum. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past St. Edward 64-61. Given St. Ignatius' advantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked first, while the Eagles are ranked 26th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jack Zapolnik was his usual excellent self, scoring 17 points along with eight assists and two steals. It was the first time this season that he posted eight or more assists. Another player making a difference was Quinn Woidke, who scored 14 points.
St. Ignatius has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten contests, which provided a nice bump to their 15-3 record this season. As for St. Edward, their defeat ended a seven-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-6.
St. Ignatius won't have much time to rest: their next game is against the Eagles at 7:15 p.m. on February 3rd. As for St. Edward, they will head out on the road to square off against the Falcons at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Lutheran East will be looking to keep their four-game home win streak alive.
