The Crystal City Javelinas will challenge the Cotulla Cowboys at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
Crystal City easily dispatched Natalia on Tuesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Javelinas fell just short of Hondo by a score of 3-1 on Friday. Having soared to a lofty 14 runs in the game before, the Javelinas couldn't push the score so high this time.
Meanwhile, after only one run in their last contest, Cotulla made sure to put some runs up on the board against Natalia on Friday. The Cowboys blew past the Mustangs 14-4. Considering the Cowboys' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Frank Torres made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits. Cotulla is undefeated when Torres posts eight or more strikeouts, but 1-10-1 otherwise. Torres was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-5. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, Davyn Deltoro was a standout: he scored two runs while going 4-for-5. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. Eli Renteria was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
Cotulla was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Cotulla's victory bumped their record up to 4-10-1. As for Crystal City, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-9.
Cotulla's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Crystal City hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .319. It's a different story for Cotulla, though, as they've only averaged .206. Will they be able to contain Crystal City's hitters?
Crystal City took their win against Cotulla in their previous meeting two weeks ago by a conclusive 12-5 score. Do the Javelinas have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cowboys turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
