Basketball Game Preview: Miller Buccaneers vs. Gregory-Portland Wildcats

The Miller Buccaneers will venture away from home to challenge the Gregory-Portland Wildcats at 6:15 p.m. on Friday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Last Tuesday, Miller lost to Flour Bluff at home by a 44-25 margin. While losing is never fun, the Buccaneers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 635th, while the Hornets are ranked 128th).

Hailey Martinez put forth a good effort for the losing side as she posted 19 points and three steals. Her evening made it four games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points.

Meanwhile, Gregory-Portland came up short against Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial on Tuesday and fell 37-26. The Wildcats haven't had much luck with the Eagles recently, as the team's come up short the last eight times they've met.

Miller will need focus on slowing down Bella Davis, one of several Gregory-Portland players who made an impact when they last played. She earned 14 points and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Shifa Ali, who put up four points and five rebounds.

Miller's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-9. As for Gregory-Portland, their record now sits at 11-8.

Miller came up short against Gregory-Portland in their previous matchup back in January, falling 58-52. Can Miller avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
