VI Section II (8 Man) recap Oct. 9, 2012
Pima extended the longest winning streak in VI Section II (8 Man) this week by beating Bowie/San Simon, 68-0. The win marks seventh in a row for the the Roughriders.
Fort Thomas was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from ninth to seventh in the league. Earlier in the week, the Apaches defeated Patagonia 56-8.
JR Tessay threw for 186 yards and three touchdowns. He went nine-11 with zero interceptions.
Jackson Ventrella was the best wideout in the league this week as Mesa Prep fell to Mogollon. Ventrella racked up eight receptions for 138 yards. Matt Ginty helped Mesa Prep's passing attack out by catching three balls for 34 yards.
Cale Merrell was the most productive running back in VI Section II (8 Man) this week. He ran for 453 yards on 19 carries as Duncan lost to the Mustangs. Laramie Wolfe also contributed to the rushing game with four yards on the ground.
On the ground, the Wildkats' Merrell has rushed for 1733 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Ventrella. The Mesa Prep star has 52 catches for 831 yards.
The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Hayden and Ray. The Lobos comes into the matchup ranked 20th in the state, while the Bearcats ranks 12th.
Fort Thomas' Tessay is within 196 passing yards of surpassing 2,000 on the season coming into this week's game against Cibecue. So far this year, Tessay has thrown for 1804 yards with 19 touchdowns and three interceptions.
Two of the top units in the league will face off this week when St. David takes on Pima. The Tigers' offense has scored 331 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while the Roughriders have allowed only 72 on the year.
