Basketball Recap: Garinger Takes a Loss

Garinger was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. The match between them and the York Prep Patriots didn't end well, with the Garinger Wildcats falling 65-46. While losing is never fun, the Wildcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 494th in North Carolina, while the Patriots are ranked 93rd in South Carolina).

Despite the loss, Garinger saw an underclassman step up: freshman Aaron Lawler went 9 of 14 en route to 20 points and six rebounds. The game was Lawler's fourth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Khente Carthran, who posted four points and 12 rebounds.

Even though they lost, Garinger smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in four consecutive contests.

Garinger's defeat dropped their record down to 1-9. As for York Prep, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Garinger will venture away from home to take on Independence at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Independence's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last five matches. As for York Prep, they are taking a road trip to challenge Andrew Jackson at 8:00 p.m. on January 7th.
