The Liberty Lions suffered their biggest loss since December 15, 2023 on Friday. Their tough 70-46 defeat to Sunrise Mountain might stick with them for a while. Liberty has struggled against Sunrise Mountain recently, as their match on Friday was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.
Despite the defeat, Liberty saw an underclassman step up: Makenna Johnson scored 16 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kallee Hilt, who scored ten points.
Sunrise Mountain's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Savanna Dotray led the charge by scoring 22 points. Addison Wiemann was another key contributor, scoring 16 points.
Liberty has been struggling recently, as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-12 record this season. As for Sunrise Mountain, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 13 games, which provided a nice bump to their 16-4 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Liberty will square off against O'Connor at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully O'Connor focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 16 last Wednesday. As for Sunrise Mountain, they will head out on the road to challenge Apollo at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Apollo will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings (they are ranked 182nd, while Sunrise Mountain is ranked 31st).
