Lake Mead Christian Academy is 8-2 against Laughlin since May of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Eagles will be playing in front of their home fans against the Cougars at 1:00 p.m. Lake Mead Christian Academy will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.
It was a Battle of the Birds when Lake Mead Christian Academy challenged Indian Springs on Tuesday. The Eagles walked away with a 6-3 victory over the Thunderbirds.
Hunter Zierleyn and Christian Marrs made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Zierleyn pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Marrs tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Zierleyn has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. At the plate, Zierleyn got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one RBI, while Marrs went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Bowe Farmer, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Danny Yeates, who earned one RBI, one run, and one stolen base.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Laughlin). They were the clear victors by a 22-6 margin over GV Christian last Tuesday. The Cougars have beaten the Guardians the last five times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Guardians has come to flipping the script.
Like Lake Mead Christian Academy, Laughlin also got a great game from a two-way player: Anthony Celli-Brookins. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over five innings while giving up six earned runs off seven hits. Celli-Brookins was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with seven stolen bases and three runs. Laughlin is 4-1 when Celli-Brookins posts two or more stolen bases, but 0-10 otherwise.
In other batting news, Ayden Whitton was incredible, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with nine stolen bases, three runs, and one double. He has become a key player for Laughlin: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 1-11 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Gavin Davis, who got on base in all five of his plate appearances with seven stolen bases and three runs.
Laughlin always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .733. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Lake Mead Christian Academy pushed their record up to 15-1 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The team dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 9.5 runs. As for Laughlin, the victory was their first on the road , bumping their record up to 4-11.
Friday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Lake Mead Christian Academy hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .438. However, it's not like Laughlin struggles in that department as they've averaged .333. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Lake Mead Christian Academy's way against Laughlin in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as Lake Mead Christian Academy made off with an 18-0 win. Will the Eagles repeat their success, or do the Cougars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
