The Chaparral Lobos will take on the Magdalena Steers in a tournament on Saturday. Chaparral will be looking to extend their current six-game winning streak.
Chaparral took a 11-run loss the last time they faced off against Mesilla Valley Christian School, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. Chaparral had just enough and edged out Mesilla Valley Christian School 4-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Lobos have posted since February 25th.
Michael Molina spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits and racked up 14 Ks. What's more, he gave up only zero walks, the fewest he's had since back in May of 2024.
At the plate, Israel Nieto and Carlos Torres did most of the damage at the plate: Nieto scored two runs and stole three bases while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances, while Torres scored a run while going 2-for-2. That's the most stolen bases Nieto has posted since back in February of 2024.
Meanwhile, Magdalena got the win against Tularosa on Friday by a conclusive 10-4. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Steers.
Shane Montoya made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off three hits. Montoya was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Joseph Zamora, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-3.
Magdalena kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Chaparral's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-4. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Magdalena, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
Magdalena's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Chaparral has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .484. It's a different story for Magdalena, though, as they've only averaged .306. Will they be able to contain Chaparral's hitters?
