Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Valley Christian walked away with it. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Payson Longhorns a 13-0 shutout on Tuesday. Considering the Trojans have won 19 games by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Cameron Bergloff was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and only one walk). Back at the plate, Caleb Danzeisen was incredible, firing off two home runs and four RBI while going 2-for-3. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Brock Jackson, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Valley Christian was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Payson only posted a batting average of .222.
The win was the 14th in a row for Valley Christian, bringing their record up to 26-2. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.9 runs on average over those games. As for Payson, with the defeat, they broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 14-14.
Looking ahead, Valley Christian will square off against River Valley on Saturday. The Trojans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Dust Devils have averaged an impressive 7.3 runs per game this season. Payson does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
