The Collegiate Dutchmen will head out on the road to square off against the Calhoun Cougars at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Collegiate is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.9 runs per game this season.
Wednesday just wasn't the day for Collegiate's offense. They lost 6-0 to Trinity on Wednesday. The Dutchmen have struggled against the Tigers recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meeting.
Collegiate saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ale' Propper-Bowring, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base.
Meanwhile, Calhoun waltzed into their game on Tuesday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They blew past the Unis 15-5. Considering the Cougars have won seven matchups by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Josh Mandel made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Quentin Ruffin, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two RBI and one double. Jordan Osorio was another key player, earning three runs and two stolen bases.
Calhoun always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .575. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .552 or higher in three consecutive contests.
Calhoun pushed their record up to 12-3-1 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for Collegiate, their loss dropped their record down to 5-4.
Both Collegiate and Calhoun just can't seem to miss. The Dutchmen have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.7 hits per game. However, it's not like Calhoun struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 2.8 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Collegiate came out on top in a nail-biter against Calhoun in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, sneaking past 8-7. Do the Dutchmen have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cougars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
