Football Recap: Santiago Gets the Win

Santiago's game on Thursday was all tied up 21-21 at the half, but luckily for them it didn't stay that way. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Hillcrest Trojans, sneaking past 52-50. For the Sharks, this counts as revenge for the 33-28 win the Trojans walked away with the last time they faced one another back in August of 2024.

Clayton Plewe went supernova, rushing for 148 yards and four TDs while picking up 9.3 yards per carry, and also throwing for 360 yards and one touchdown while picking up 12.4 yards per attempt. Those 360 passing yards gave him a new career-high. Santiago's leading receiver Ryan Wilson was Plewe's top target yet again, picking up 227 receiving yards and one score.

Special teams also deserves some recognition, posting 16 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Zack Jackson, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.

When it comes to explaining why Hillcrest lost, don't look at Matthew Ramos. Despite the final result, he picked up 121 receiving yards and a pair of TDs, and also rushed for 33 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Ramos got the majority of those receiving yards when he pulled down a pass and took off for a gain of 77 yards. Zyren Jones was another key player, picking up 115 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Santiago has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 41.5 points this season. As for Hillcrest, their record now sits at 1-1.

Santiago will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Silverado at 7:00 p.m. on the 12th. As for Hillcrest, they will take on Ramona at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
