Middletown has gone 8-2 against Newburgh Free Academy recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Middie Bears will be playing in front of their home fans against the Goldbacks at 4:15 p.m. Middletown is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.
Middletown will face Newburgh Free Academy after dropping another heartbreaker against Pine Bush on Wednesday, which marked the second time in a row the team's come within 2.1 of beating them. The Middie Bears lost 9-3 to the Bushmen. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Middie Bears have suffered since May 4, 2024.
Bethannie French spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and six unearned) runs on 12 hits and racked up six Ks.
At the plate, Middletown saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Isabella Platero, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, Newburgh Free Academy got the win against Washingtonville on Wednesday by a conclusive 13-1. The Goldbacks haven't had any issues with the Wizards recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.
Parker Mullarkey was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two triples, three runs, and one stolen base. Those triples marked the first that she has hit this season. Liana Shaw was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double.
Middletown's defeat dropped their record down to 5-4. As for Newburgh Free Academy, the victory got them back to even at 5-5.
Newburgh Free Academy's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Middletown has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Newburgh Free Academy, though, as they've been averaging only 4.1 strikeouts. Will Middletown keep running through batters, or will the Goldbacks buck the trend?
Everything went Middletown's way against Newburgh Free Academy in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, as Middletown made off with a 13-0 win. Will the Middie Bears repeat their success, or do the Goldbacks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
