The Westminster Lions will head out on the road to face off against the Schurr Spartans at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Westminster is looking to tack on another W to their four-game streak on the road.
Last Friday, Westminster had to suffer through a rough 42-7 loss at the hands of Laguna Beach. While losing is never fun, Westminster can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 481st, while Laguna Beach is ranked 197th).
Meanwhile, Schurr entered their tilt with Montebello with eight consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with nine. Everything went Schurr's way against Montebello on Friday as Schurr made off with a 49-28 victory. The result was nothing new for Schurr, who have now won seven games by 21 points or more so far this season.
Elias Navarro had a dynamite game for Schurr, rushing for 174 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 8.3 yards per carry. Christian Breazeale was another key contributor, rushing for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Special teams was a major factor in the game for Schurr, racking up 21 points in total. All those points came courtesy of Andrew Murguia: he added 21 points with seven field goals.
Laguna Beach's win bumped their season record to 9-1 while Westminster's loss dropped theirs to 7-3.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Westminster has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 177.1 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Schurr struggles in that department as they've been even better at 190.3 per game. It's looking like Friday's contest might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Everything went Westminster's way against Schurr when the teams last played back in November of 2022 as Westminster made off with a 33-7 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Westminster since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
