The Wheatmore Warriors are taking a road trip to square off against the Salisbury Hornets at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Last Friday, everything went Wheatmore's way against Gray Stone Day as Wheatmore made off with a 15-3 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Warriors.
Bella Dill made a big impact no matter where she played. She struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). Dill was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Wheatmore got a massive performance out of Kyndal Kindley, who scored three runs and stole Five bases. while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Savannah Heiney, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI, one run, and one double.
Wheatmore was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .391. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher every time they've taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, Salisbury got the win against Statesville on Tuesday by a conclusive 22-10. The Hornets haven't had any issues with the Greyhounds recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Like Wheatmore, Salisbury also got a great game from a two-way player: Ashley Yang. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching six innings while giving up just two earned (and eight unearned) runs off seven hits. Yang also tossed eight walks, marking her first of the season. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in five of her six plate appearances with one home run, five runs, and four RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Allison Peeler, who scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in all six of her plate appearances. Addisyn Myers was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-5.
Wheatmore now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Salisbury, their record is now 3-1.
Thursday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Wheatmore hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .438. However, it's not like Salisbury struggles in that department as they've averaged .402. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Wheatmore took their victory against Salisbury in their previous matchup on Thursday by a conclusive 16-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for Wheatmore since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
