Baseball Recap: Vernon Triumphs

Vernon came out on top against Newton on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run fourth inning. The Vikings walked away with an 8-3 win over the Braves. The victory continues a trend for the Vikings in their matchups with the Braves: they've now won nine in a row.

Joe Mancini and Joe Esposito dominated on the mound. Mancini pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits, while Esposito tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Mancini has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, Vernon got a big performance out of Tyler Dobrzynski, who went 2-for-3 with three runs and one stolen base. Those three runs gave Dobrzynski a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Joe D'Aprile, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double.

Vernon always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .548. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.

Vernon's record is now 14-6. As for Newton, they have been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-13 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Vernon will welcome Kittatinny Regional at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Newton, they will be playing at home against Sussex County Tech at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The last three games Sussex County Tech has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
