Port St. Lucie (Fla.) took the lead for good when
Lyle Messam ran for a touchdown with 9:00 left in the fourth quarter and held on to defeat
Viera (Fla.) 35-28 on Saturday.
After trailing 21-14 at the half, the Hawks went ahead on a touchdown with 5:00 remaining in the third.
Port St. Lucie saw its 7-point halftime lead fall to six entering the fourth.
Viera's
Cody Dentmon played well. He threw one touchdown and ran for one touchdown.
PSL's standout player in the win was
DJ (Dikingson) Juste. The senior quarterback ran for one touchdown. He has now scored three touchdowns on the season.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 23-0 win for the Jaguars.
The victory was a step in the right direction for Port St. Lucie, which was coming off a 26-21 defeat at the hands of Sebastian River in its previous game.
Viera (0-7) goes up against Melbourne Central Catholic in a non-conference game matchup next week, while Port St. Lucie (2-5) locks horns with Central in a 7A District 12 game.
