The Blacksburg Wildcats pushed their score all the way to 73 on Wednesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 86-73 hit to the loss column at the hands of Landrum. Blacksburg has struggled against Landrum recently, as their contest on Wednesday was their seventh consecutive lost matchup.
Defeat or not, Blacksburg got some senior leadership from Jacob Gilfillan and Tracy Smith. Gilfillan scored 23 points along with four steals, while Smith. scored 17 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Gilfillan has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Christian Federico, who scored ten points along with five assists.
It was another big night for Franklin Davis, who dropped a double-double on 28 points and 12 rebounds for Landrum. Davis is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 15 or more in the last six games he's played. Another player making a difference was Benett Edwards, who scored 18 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
Blacksburg's loss dropped their record down to 1-12. As for Landrum, the win was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 16-4.
Blacksburg will head out on the road to face off against Liberty at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Liberty's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last five matches. As for Landrum, Landrum and Greer Middle College will face off at 7:30 p.m. on January 19th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in South Carolina (Greer Middle College is ranked 59th, while Landrum is ranked 45th).
