Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Emerson). They blew past Denison 45-7 on the road on Friday. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Mavericks just coasted through the last quarter.
DJ Shelton had a dynamite game for Emerson, throwing for 263 yards and three touchdowns on only 19 passes. Kelton Wafer did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 121 receiving yards.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Emerson was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 203 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.
Memorial's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-3. As for Emerson, their record is now 3-1.
Memorial was dealt a bruising 56-14 defeat at the hands of Emerson in their previous meeting back in October of 2023. Thankfully for Memorial, Michael Hawkins (who threw for 279 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 14.0 yards per attempt, and also rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown on only five carries) won't be suiting up this time.
