The Cesar E. Chavez Lobos will head out on the road to take on the Lamar Texans at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Cesar E. Chavez is coming into the contest on a five-game losing streak dating back to last season.
Cesar E. Chavez is headed into the matchup having just suffered their closest loss since March 27, 2024 on Friday. They fell just short of Heights by a score of 5-3.
Ava Castillo spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on six hits and racked up 11 Ks.
At the plate, Ahmani Hawkins made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.
Even though they lost, Cesar E. Chavez hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts every time they've taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Lamar). They were the clear victor by a 16-1 margin over Westside on Tuesday.
Leila Ayarzagoitia was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. What's more, she gave up only zero earned runs, the fewest she's had since back in March of 2024. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double. That double was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Natalie Giannone was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March of 2024. Saige Marshall also deserves some recognition as she scored her first runs of the season.
Cesar E. Chavez's defeat dropped their record down to 0-3. As for Lamar, their record now sits at 2-5.
Lamar's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Cesar E. Chavez has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.7 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Lamar, though, as they've been averaging only 0.9 strikeouts. Will Cesar E. Chavez keep running through batters, or will Lamar buck the trend?
Everything went Cesar E. Chavez's way against Lamar when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Cesar E. Chavez made off with a 10-2 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Cesar E. Chavez since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
