Emmanuel Segura and Benji Perez made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Segura didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. Meanwhile, Perez pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Those six strikeouts gave Segura a new career-high. At the plate, Segura scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances, while Perez scored a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jayden Popoy, who scored a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. Jacob Sixtos also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.
Meanwhile, Shafter made easy work of Del Oro two weeks ago and carried off a 16-1 victory. Considering the Generals have won three games by more than eight runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Chavez, Shafter also got a great game from a two-way player: Nini Garcia. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Garcia was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with five RBI, one stolen base, and one run.
In other batting news, Alex Casanova-Balderrama and Joaquin Garza did most of the damage at the plate: Casanova-Balderrama scored a run and stole Two bases. while going 2-for-2, while Garza scored two runs while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Dustin Smith, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-2.
Shafter kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits every time they've taken the field this season.
Shafter's record now sits at 3-1. As for Chavez, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
Chavez came out on top in a nail-biter against Shafter when the teams last played back in May of 2024, sneaking past 4-2. Will Chavez repeat their success, or does Shafter have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
