Bellevue West scored a shocking upset when it eliminated Omaha North, 35-30. At the time, the Vikings were ranked second in the state, while the Thunderbirds were 35th.
Brad Brazeal and Malik Hluchoweckyj provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Omaha North. The connection was good for 90 yards, the longest such play in A District 2 this season.
Papillion-LaVista's dynamic duo of alec ditoro and jalen allison proved to be unstoppable against Burke, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Ditoro threw for 338 yards and 4 touchdowns and allison had 192 yards receiving. reid matthias helped Papillion-LaVista's passing attack out by catching 7 balls for 102 yards.
He went 21-28 with 1 interception.
Brazeal provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Bellevue West beat Larry Martin's team. He completed 24 passes for 382 yards and 3 touchdowns and also ran for 82 yards. Brazeal's favorite target this week was Hluchoweckyj, who caught 6 passes for 152 yards.
Calvin Strong was a beast in the backfield as the Vikings lost to Michael Huffman's team.
The Thunderbirds' Brazeal and CJ Johnson have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Brazeal has thrown for 2,073 yards this season, while Johnson has 60 catches for 1,102 yards. Strong from Omaha North leads the league in rushing with 1,960 yards.
The most important game in the league this week will be the match up between the Bulldogs and Bellevue West. Burke enters the game ranked 15th in the state, while the Thunderbirds ranks 21st.
Paul Limongi's team's Logan Gier is a mere 10 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. In 137 carries Gier has accumulated 990 yard this year.
Fans will be treated to a premier battle in the secondary when the Thunderbirds' Johnson goes up against the Bulldogs' Rodney Williams.
The Monarchs' ditoro is within 75 passing yards of surpassing 2,000 on the season coming into this week's game against Millard South. So far this year, ditoro has thrown for 1,925 yards with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Next week's game between Bellevue West and Burke will feature an aerial matchup as Brazeal tests his arm against Williams' defensive ability.
The Thunderbirds were able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after topping the Vikings. Bellevue West came in at 21 in the state poll after placing at number 35 last week.
