Xavier came into Thursday's contest looking for another win against Fox Valley Lutheran, but Riley Schmitz wouldn't allow it. The Foxes walked away with a 3-1 victory over the Hawks on Thursday for which the team can thank Schmitz, who had ten digs and six aces. She has been hot, having posted ten or more digs the last six times she's played.
Fox Valley Lutheran had a slow start but a hot finish: after dropping the first set, they turned around to win the next three. The match finished with set scores of 16-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-11.
Fox Valley Lutheran's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Sammie Thomas, who had nine digs and three aces.
They weren't the only good servers: Fox Valley Lutheran was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 15 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least six aces in nine consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Oconto Falls came up short against Luxemburg-Casco on Tuesday and fell 3-1.
Oconto Falls couldn't get the win, but they sure gave Luxemburg-Casco a tough time in the first set. The final score came out to 30-28, 25-19, 18-25, 25-14.
Fox Valley Lutheran's win bumped their record up to 23-8. As for Oconto Falls, their defeat dropped their record down to 27-6.
Fox Valley Lutheran came out on top in a nail-biter against Oconto Falls when the teams last played back in October of 2024, sneaking past 3-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Foxes since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
