1A Tri-County recap Oct. 16, 2012
Marcelias Sutton of James Kenan ran for the longest rushing play in 1A Tri-County this season against Midway last week. Sutton ran for 84 yards on the play and finished with 145 on the day as his team topped the Raiders.
Pender moved up to 236 from 265 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Patriots climbed the ranks as a result of falling to Wallace-Rose Hill 28-14.
James Kenan's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Gregory Washington threw for 52 and one touchdown and Sutton had 52 yards receiving.
Baird Kilpatrick made the biggest impact on defense this week as Ken Avent's team bested Midway. The 6-foot-1 senior racked up 1.5 sacks.
5-foot-9 quarterback Alfredo Garcia of Union is the league leader in passing yards this season with 653. He has also thrown five touchdowns. On the ground, the Tigers' Sutton has rushed for 964 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Sutton. The James Kenan star has five catches for 238 yards.
James Kenan's Sutton is a mere 36 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season.
A big matchup in 1A Tri-County this week will be when Pender takes on Lakewood. The Patriots are currently in sixth, while the Leopards are in second.
The Tigers extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Paul Hall's team, 30-0. The victory was the eighth in a row for James Kenan.
