The Point Loma Pointers are taking a road trip to square off against the Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Point Loma 3, Mater Dei Catholic 1.5) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Point Loma is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They blew past Whittier Christian 10-1. Considering the Pointers have won ten games by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Ella Poulin made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched. Poulin was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Remington Spangler, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Delilah Pearlmutter, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Mater Dei Catholic had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6 runs) and they went ahead and made it eight on Saturday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Pointers, sneaking past 5-3.
Like Point Loma, Mater Dei Catholic also got a great game from a two-way player: Arri Romero. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off nine hits (and not a single walk). Romero has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 23 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two RBI, and one double.
In other batting news, Maya Matthies was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Point Loma's record is now 24-9. As for Mater Dei Catholic, their record now sits at 29-3.
Point Loma couldn't quite finish off Mater Dei Catholic in their previous meeting on Saturday and fell 5-3. Can the Pointers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
