The Viera Hawks can finally bid farewell to their five-game losing streak thanks to their game on Saturday. They walked away with a 61-53 win over Merritt Island Christian.
Leading Viera to victory were Phantasia Lauriston and Lauren Bell. Lauriston almost dropped a triple-double on 18 points, nine rebounds, and ten assists, while Bell dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds. Lauriston hasn't dropped below two steals for five straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Kylie Winslow, who scored 12 points.
Merritt Island Christian lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Kaity Shea, who scored 19 points along with six assists and three steals. Shea is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Summer Snaith, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Viera's victory bumped their record up to 9-12. As for Merritt Island Christian, their loss was their fourth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 12-7.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Viera will take on Spruce Creek at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Spruce Creek presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Viera in Florida (Spruce Creek is ranked 46th, while Viera is ranked 246th). As for Merritt Island Christian, they will head out on the road to take on Merritt Island at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Merritt Island is coming into the matchup on a three-game losing streak.
