The University Hawks will square off against the Morgantown Mohigans at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Morgantown took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on University, who comes in off a win.
Having struggled with three losses in a row, University turned things around against John Marshall on Monday. They walked away with a 5-2 victory over the Monarchs.
Jacob Kennison tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run over 6.2 innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (three).
At the plate, Brance McCune and Baret Shuba did most of the damage at the plate: McCune scored two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances, while Shuba scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Shuba also brought in two RBI, marking his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Max Cash, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Morgantown faced Parkersburg South in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Mohigans fell just short of the Patriots by a score of 5-4. That's two games in a row now that the Mohigans have lost by just one run.
Vincent Aloi was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he pitched seven innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. What's more, he gave up only zero walks, the fewest he's had since back in May of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one RBI.
In other batting news, Weston Mazey was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-4.
This is the second loss in a row for Morgantown and nudges their season record down to 7-5. Even worse, they were so close both times: the defeats came by an average of only one runs. As for University, their win bumped their record up to 5-7.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. University has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Morgantown struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
