This season hasn't been kind to the Poquoson Islanders, who are still winless after their sixth game. They fell just short of Arcadia by a score of 59-57. While losing is never fun, Poquoson can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 342nd, while Arcadia is ranked 118th).
Poquoson lost on Monday despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Daniel Sperling, who scored 12 points. Those 12 points set a new season-high mark for him. Another player making a difference was Khaleo Smith, who scored 14 points.
Poquoson bumped their record down to 0-6 with that defeat, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. As for Arcadia, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 7-4.
Poquoson will head out on the road to face off against New Kent at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. New Kent knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past four games -- so hopefully Poquoson likes a good challenge. As for Arcadia, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Denbigh Baptist Christian at 6:30 p.m. on January 18th.
