Softball Recap: Emporia Wins Going Away Against Independent

Emporia came out on top against Independent on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive nine-run sixth inning. The Spartans blew past the Panthers 16-1. The result was nothing new for the Spartans, who have now won six matches by ten runs or more so far this season.

Alivia Barrett made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out seven over six innings pitched. Barrett was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Marley Sewell, who went 3-for-5 with four RBI, one triple, and one stolen base. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in May of 2024. Yzabel Ultreras was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run and three runs.

Emporia kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive games.

Emporia's win bumped their record up to 6-10. As for Independent, they are on a seven-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-2.

Coming up, Emporia will welcome Iola at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Spartans will need to watch out since the Mustangs have now posted at least ten runs every time they've taken the field this season. Independent does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
