It was a good run, but the Cherokee County Warriors unfortunately witnessed the end of their nine-game winning streak on Friday. They fell 21-14 to Fort Payne. Cherokee County lost against Fort Payne in their previous head to head back in October of 2022, too, but the margin this time around was much wider than the 35-16 score last time.
When it comes to explaining why Cherokee County lost, one person who can't be blamed is Jacob Cornejo. Despite the final result, he rushed for 155 yards. Cornejo is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last five games he's played.
Cherokee County's defeat dropped their record down to 10-1. As for Fort Payne, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cherokee County will take on Central at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Central knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past six contests -- so hopefully Cherokee County likes a good challenge. As for Fort Payne, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Mortimer Jordan at 7:00 p.m. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Alabama (Mortimer Jordan is ranked 72nd, while Fort Payne is ranked 67th).
