The Wakulla War Eagles's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their sixth straight loss. They fell to Taylor County 42-38. The game was a 16-16 toss-up at halftime, but Wakulla was outscored by Taylor County in the second.
Wakulla lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Kyendra Thomas, who scored 15 points along with six rebounds and five steals. That was a full 39.5% of Wakulla's points, marking the eighth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Amariyah Donaldson, who scored six points along with three blocks.
Taylor County found their leader in underclassman Irene Meler, who scored 18 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Meler has scored all season. LeeAsia Johnson was another key contributor, scoring ten points.
Wakulla's defeat was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 2-8. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 28.2 points per game. As for Taylor County, their win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 3-8.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Wakulla on the road again on Friday and play against Jefferson County at 6:00 p.m. on January 12th. Jefferson County's defense has only allowed 28.7 points per game this season, so Wakulla's offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Taylor County, they will head out on the road to square off against Aucilla Christian at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Aucilla Christian focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 18 on Thursday.
