Carter Smith and Nolan Guzman were major factors while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Smith pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Guzman struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits (and not a single walk). That's the most strikeouts he has posted over his last five matchups. At bat, Smith went 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs, while Guzman went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Blake Cope was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Covenant Christian is undefeated when Cope posts two or more runs, but 6-7 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Barrett Beyers, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Cathedral had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.4 runs) and they went ahead and made it six on Friday. They blew past the Trojans 11-1. The result was nothing new for the Fighting Irish, who have now won seven contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Landon Hughes tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Eli Bennett, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Cameron Koers also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Cathedral was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .522. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Cathedral's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-6. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.5 runs over those games. As for Covenant Christian, their record now sits at 13-7.
Covenant Christian suffered a grim 9-0 defeat to Cathedral in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Warriors avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
