Matanzas pushed their score all the way to 68 on Monday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell 78-68 to Father Lopez. While losing is never fun, Matanzas can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 539th, while Father Lopez is ranked 67th).
Matanzas' loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Henry Robinson Jr. , who dropped a double-double on 28 points and ten rebounds, and Tariq Shakir who scored 21 points along with seven assists. The game was Robinson Jr. 's eighth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Rya'sir Jefferson , who scored eight points along with six assists.
Meanwhile, St. Augustine scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Friday. They strolled past Menendez with points to spare, taking the game 50-36. That looming 50-36 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for St. Augustine yet this season.
Matanzas' defeat dropped their record down to 1-7. As for St. Augustine, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
Matanzas came up short against St. Augustine in their previous matchup back in December of 2022, falling 62-53. Can Matanzas avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
