The Fowler Grizzlies gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Thursday. They escaped with a win against Evangel Christian Academy by the margin of a single free throw, 45-44. For Fowler, this counts as revenge for the 48-45 loss Evangel Christian Academy walked away with the last time they faced one another back in December of 2022.
Fowler was led to victory by Jaslyn Bates and Randi Maestas. Bates scored 15 points along with four steals, while Maestas scored 15 points along with five rebounds and four steals.
Several Eagles players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Mia Castro, who scored 13 points along with six assists and three steals. Another player making a difference was Ellie Wagner, who scored seven points.
Fowler's win was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 1-0. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.9 points per game. As for Evangel Christian Academy, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-1.
Fowler will head out on the road to face off against Swallows Charter Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Evangel Christian Academy, they will be playing at home against La Veta at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully La Veta focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 27 on Tuesday.
