Basketball Recap: Bertrand Picks Up Sixth Consecutive Victory

Bertrand came tearing into Saturday's matchup with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 23.6 points) and they left with even more momentum. They slipped by the Overton Eagles 60-59. For the Vikings, this counts as revenge for the 62-48 win the Eagles walked away with the last time they faced one another back in January of 2024.

Marcus Hernandez was his usual excellent self, almost dropping a double-double on 23 points and nine rebounds. Those 23 points gave him a new career-high. Hunter Nelson was another key player, going 5 for 11 en route to 13 points and six boards.

Bertrand smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in four consecutive contests.

Several Eagles players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Eli Luther, who went 10 of 20 on his way to 28 points and six rebounds. The game was Luther's third in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Brock McCarter, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 13 boards.

Bertrand's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-4. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 61.3 points per game. As for Overton, their defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 6-7.

Bertrand will square off against Maywood/Hayes Center at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Bertrand's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last seven matchups. Overton has already played their next contest (against Hi-Line [Eustis-Farnam/Elwood]), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
