Even though the Yucaipa Thunderbirds scored an imposing 64 points on Saturday, the San Jacinto Tigers still came out on top. San Jacinto took their matchup against Yucaipa 73-64. The victory made it back-to-back wins for San Jacinto.
San Jacinto was led to victory by Josiah Mejia and Stephen Castleberry. Mejia scored 23 points along with 7 assists and 7 steals, while Castleberry scored 30 points along with 6 assists and 5 steals. That makes it five consecutive games in which Mejia has scored at least 25% of San Jacinto's points. Brian Kincherlow was another key contributor, scoring 10 points.
Yucaipa's loss came despite strong showings from Malik Young and Jonathan Campbell. Young scored 31 points along with 5 assists, while Campbell dropped a double-double on 18 points and 21 rebounds. Young scored a full 48.4% of Yucaipa's points, the second time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Tristan Doty, who scored 4 points along with 8 rebounds.
Even though they lost, Yucaipa were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as San Jacinto only pulled down two.
The win got San Jacinto back to even at 4-4. As for Yucaipa, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-4 record this season.
San Jacinto will challenge Hemet at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. As for Yucaipa, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Palm Springs at 6:45 p.m. Palm Springs is looking to tack on another W to their four-game streak on the road.
