On Saturday, Maury was just a bucket shy of victory and fell 43-42 to Hampton Roads Academy.
Maury's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was SaraJane Walker, who scored 11 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Nyla Brown, who scored ten points.
Hampton Roads Academy found their leader in underclassman Zuriel Pendleton-morant, who scored 17 points along with nine rebounds and three steals. Those nine rebounds set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Kenzie Cooper, who scored eight points along with 12 rebounds and five blocks.
Maury's loss dropped their record down to 4-6. As for Hampton Roads Academy, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 4-3.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Maury's road trip will continue as they head out to face St. Margaret's at 2:00 p.m. on January 6th. As for Hampton Roads Academy, they will challenge Veritas School at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
