Baseball Game Preview: Smyer Bobcats vs. Sundown Roughnecks

Smyer and Sundown are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2021, but likely not for long. The Bobcats will head out on the road to challenge the Roughnecks at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Smyer has four straight wins, Sundown has seven straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Smyer came out on top against Seagraves on Saturday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run sixth inning. The Bobcats walked away with a 9-6 victory over the Eagles.

Colton Burris made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs. He has become a key player for Smyer: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 4-9 otherwise.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Caleb Pearce, who earned three RBI, two runs, and two stolen bases. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last five games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ryan Gutierrez, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Friday just wasn't the day for Sundown's offense. They came up short against Ropes on Friday, falling 12-0.

Smyer's record now sits at 7-10. As for Sundown, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-9.

Smyer suffered a grim 16-10 defeat to Sundown in their previous meeting back in April of 2025. Can the Bobcats avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
