Meridian hasn't had much luck against Nokomis recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Hawks will square off against the Redskins at 4:30 p.m.
Meridian made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Tuscola, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Hawks fell just short of the Warriors by a score of 8-6 on Friday. The Hawks' defeat continues a trend for the team, making it three in a row.
Wyatt Martin was huge no matter where he played even without the win. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. What's more, he gave up only one walk, the fewest he's had since back in March. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one double. That double was his first of the season.
In other batting news, Ted Jones made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Dan Enlow was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run.
Meanwhile, Nokomis had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Tuesday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Minutemen an 11-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Redskins, who have now won eight games by eight runs or more so far this season.
Nokomis saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ian Keller, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with five stolen bases and four runs. What's more, Keller posted two hits, the most he's had since back in May of 2024. Another was Blain Goodwin, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Nokomis' win bumped their record up to 14-12. As for Meridian, their loss dropped their record down to 1-15.
Meridian couldn't quite finish off Nokomis when the teams last played back in May of 2022 and fell 3-1. Can the Hawks avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
