The Clifton-Clyde Eagles's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their third straight defeat. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 50-49 to Concordia. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Clifton-Clyde came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 49th, while the Panthers are ranked 129th).
Despite the defeat, Clifton-Clyde saw an underclassman step up: Sevy Wurtz scored 22 points along with seven rebounds and five steals. That was a full 44.9% of Clifton-Clyde's points, marking the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Shea Wurtz, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine rebounds.
Even though they lost, Clifton-Clyde smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Clifton-Clyde dropped their record down to 11-3 with that loss, which was their third straight at home. As for Concordia, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 6-5.
Clifton-Clyde will play host again and welcome the Mustangs, where tip off is scheduled for TBD on Friday. Doniphan West is coming into the contest hot, having won their last four games. Concordia's road trip will continue as they head out to face the Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. on February 1st.
