The Chaparral Lobos will head out to face off against the Cathedral Fighting Irish at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Chaparral is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.4 runs per game this season.
Chaparral is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Da Vinci just ended the team's seven-game winning streak on Monday. They lost 12-6 to the Dragons.
Carlos Torres made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Nicolas Flores was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Cathedral entered their tilt with Santa Teresa on Monday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They put the hurt on the Desert Warriors with a sharp 15-2 win. Cathedral's victory was all the more impressive since the Desert Warriors were averaging only three runs allowed on the season.
Raul Diaz tossed a big game, striking out six batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in April of 2024.
On the hitting side, Cathedral let Gabriel Ramirez and Julian Escalante run wild. Ramirez got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and three RBI, while Escalante went 3-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. Those three runs gave Escalante a new career-high. Alex Medrano also deserves some recognition as he launched his first home run of the season.
Cathedral lost a few balls and finished the game with five home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Cathedral's record now sits at 16-7-1. As for Chaparral, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-5.
Monday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Chaparral hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .333. However, it's not like Cathedral struggles in that department as they've averaged .351. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Chaparral suffered a grim 23-11 defeat to Cathedral in their previous matchup back in March. Can the Lobos avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
