The Dexter Demons will venture away from home to square off against the Portales Rams at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Dexter is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.2 runs per game this season.
Dexter is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: Lovington, who was ranked 13th at the time (Dexter was ranked fifth). The Demons came out on top in a nail-biter against the Wildcats on Tuesday, sneaking past 3-1.
Danyela Munoz spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Maddie Miller, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayci Sanders, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Portales entered their tilt with Clovis on Wednesday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Wildcats a 15-0 shutout. The Rams might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matchups by ten runs or more this season.
Annaleah Lujan was incredible, going 3-for-4 with two triples, five RBI, and two runs. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Maria Lujan, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4.
Portales' victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-5. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.7 runs over those games. As for Dexter, their victory bumped their record up to 11-1.
Friday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Dexter hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .324. However, it's not like Portales struggles in that department as they've averaged .378. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Dexter came out on top in a nail-biter against Portales in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, sneaking past 20-19. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Demons since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
